Background
Christopher
Columbus discovered the Island of St. Vincent at 1498. The country's
first known inhabitants were Arawaks, later driven out by Caribs; the
latter put up a strong resistance to European colonisation. Through the
Island's history, the residency of mainland had been basically shared
by 2 races of people, the 'Caribs' on the Leeward side of the island
and the 'Garifunas' on the Windward. In 1797, the Garifunas were
shipped to Central America and simultaneously the yellow Caribs moved
to the northeast of the island to what is now called Sandy Bay where
their descendants now live.
St.
Vincent changed hands between the English and French several times.
France took the island in 1779, but restored it to Britain in 1783,
under the Treaty of Versailles. At last, The British handled the Island
as a colony in 1871.
Through
the historical evolution of the Island, St Vincent and the Grenadines
is a small agricultural country which its full independent movement was
started relatively late, after the break up of the West Indies
Federation, of which it had been a member, in 1962. In 1969,the Island
gained the right of internal self government and became a
self-governing state in British Associated State. At the end, St.
Vincent is recognized as a fully independent state within the British
Commonwealth on October 27, 1979.
